Mesa Verde National Park is a World Heritage Site.
Ancient Anasazi created amazing buildings in their 700 year life in this region. The last stages are immortalized by Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Square Tower House.
Rangers lead tours, museums have dioramas, and one gets the cultural sense of how the Anasazi lived.
Cliff Palace
In the 125 years since Richard Wetherill, hunting for cattle, discovered Cliff Palace one snowy December, it has become a world-wide icon commemorating our heritage of Anasazi cliff dwellings.
Shadows are slowly beginning to creep across distant walls, swallows are swooping from beneath the roof, and the ranger let me stay behind, for just a moment, to capture this gorgeous image.
Today, there are no children running about screaming with glee. Instead, we have the simple majesty of a civilizations historic remnants, falling into disarray.
