BistiArt  > 2010 Anasazi Adventures > Chaco Canyon
Chaco Cultural National Historic Park

~ A World Heritage Site
- is famous for ancient Anasazi Pueblos, the Sun Dagger on Fajada Butte, and an interpretation of Solar and Lunar influences on building orientations.

We present some of the important pueblos. We enjoy shootin' moonrise; Chaco provides superb shots at various locales.

The Solstice Project has carefully measured building walls, windows, and other features to provide an interpretation suggesting the equinox, solstices, and lunar standstills were interpreted by the Anasazi as markers for orientating their ancient, complex dwellings.

We will talk about Solar and Lunar influences on orientations of pueblo design.

BistiArt > Pueblo Bonito

At equinox, the sun rises along this wall over the eastern mesa in the distance.

At sunset, simply face your camera west, and see a gorgeous sunset along this wall.
BistiArt > Cochise' Moon

A towering cliff wall seems to be Cochise glaring down with lowered brow on a rising moon.

Is that the nose of his grandfather just below?
BistiArt > Pueblo Bonito - Backwall

You're standing just at the cliff base, behind Pueblo Bonito, in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. To the left in the intermediate ground, Pueblo del Arroyo's ruins act in complement, with the south wall of Chaco Wash as backdrop.

Chaco's Pueblo Bonito was built as a 7 story building some 1,000 years ago during Anasazi time. Many features at Chaco have elevated it to the status of World Heritage Site.

Both Pueblo Bonito and Pueblo del Arroyo arenoted for the building orientation.
The south wall of Pueblo Bonito is parallel to the sun's path at Equinox.
A SE trending wall in Pueblo del Arroyo reflects a lunar minor standstill.

Might be a nice place for gorgeous sunset images, with special CCNP permit...
BistiArt > Chaco Moon

Two days before full moon, the foreground edge of Fajada Butte in shadow and the background edge of Chaco Mesa underly a soft, swiftly rising moon.

Fajada Butte, home of the famous Sun Dagger, as the Edge of Light rises in the background.

The moon is well above in the direct pink light.
BistiArt > Pueblo del Arroyo

A picture of this window appears in the Sofaer Solstice Report showing a minor lunar standstill moon centered in the window.
